Groupie Love...10 Years Later

MTV has a new show called "When I was 17." This is Colorado Music Buzz's "When I was 14"

When I was 17 I was graduated from high school and all about Hip Hop....but when I was 14 I was in LOVE with The Backstreet Boys. We're talking posters in my room, all the magazine cut outs I could fit in my middle school locker and obnoxious tears at my very first concert-BSB at the Pepsi Center.
I was especially crazy about A.J. (the bad boy). Not only was he the best singer, he had tattoos and cool style. I loved their love songs, though I knew nothing about love and was still a little but afraid of boys. I hated N'Sync and I new every word to every song- melodies and ad libs included.

10 years later, I was reunited with my 14-year-old love.
I did my best to go in without expectation. Would they be old and slow? Would their voices sound untrained? Did years of drugs, having kids and living in the post-MTV generation of music kill their spirits and rhythm? Worst of all, would A.J. look like a creepy old man to me now?

Short one member (the oldest dude who seldom had a solo or a screaming girl in his wake is no longer a part of the crew) they got down just like they used to. The stage was smaller. the effects were lessened and the girls weren't quite as loud, but the outfits still matched, the dance moves still looked kinda dumb and the words haven't changed.I had a new appreciation for the love songs as an adult. Who doesn't want to be told their man will love them no matter what and he sympathizes with your broken heart?

Despite the flack that they have and probably still receive for being part of Lou Pearlman's boy band machine in the 90s, these guys really can sing. The harmonies were on point and there were no background singers or lip-synching moments. The two hour set combined some of their new material and a lot of the old favorites. They changed outfits a handful of times- still maintaining that hardly visible individual flair in the form of a belt here or a hat there.

And, A.J. did look a little less bad ass and a little more bald, but he still leads the group in power vocals and swag.
Yes, I said it, swag.

Wednesday Nights @ the [Met] Opera

Beginning tomorrow evening (June 16), a number of Denver-area movie theatres will reprise six different Met in HD productions over the course of consecutive Wednesday evenings. These operas are replays of the live Saturday afternoon cinecasts taken from the past several seasons. Each encore presentation starts promptly at 6:30 p.m. To find a venue near you, check out Fathom Events, the Metropolitan Opera, or the Denver Post. Here is a brief description of the first two operas to be shown:

June 16—Aida
The Met’s production of this Verdi masterpiece is a massive homage to excess—grand opera at its most extravagant—from the spectacular costumes to the larger-than-life sets. The well-known Triumphal March scene includes so many extras and props that every pseudo-Egyptian artifact within miles of Lincoln Center is in use on this stage. Violetta Urmana sings the title role and does a credible job, as does Johan Botha as Radamès (her erstwhile lover), but this production belongs to Dolora Zajick, the American-born mezzo-soprano who has owned the role of Amneris for the past 20 years and still performs it with tremendous fire and a voice you will not easily forget.

June 23—Roméo et Juliette
Anna Netrebko (pictured above) received significant kudos for her performance in this most famous of Charles Gounod’s operas, and her spectacular vocal gymnastics are but one reason not to miss this performance. Her athleticism adds a youthful exuberance to a role usually sung by staid sopranos who require a significant amount of suspension of disbelief when contemplating the fact that Juliet is supposed to be a teenager. This performance reaches back several years, prior to the vocal difficulties that now seem to affect tenor Roberto Alagna, although he would definitely not be my first choice for Roméo.

The 12thAnnual Crestone Music Festival will be held August 6, 7 & 8 at the Challenger Golf Club in Crestone, Colorado. CrestFest is a three-day, two-stage, multi-genre, multi-cultural event featuring international, national, regional and local performers as well as global cuisine, wine, micro-brews and mojitos. There are arts, crafts and activities for children and adults, including men’s and women’s wood chopping, pie-eating and limbo contests, a climbing wall, Eurobungy, the Salida Circus, hula-hoops, beach balls, face painting, fire dancers and a laser light show. The festival is a production of Crestone Performances Inc., a 501c3 non-profit community service organization that annually produces the Crestone Music Festival, offers free consulting and technical support to other community organizations, and has produced and subsidized educational and cultural presentations in San Luis Valley schools for the past eight years.

Saturday’s headliner is Booker T. Booker is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a three-time Grammy winner. While Neil Young won’t be showing up, be sure to catch the funk master Booker T. and his cookin’ band on Saturday.
Sunday’s headliner will be Tab Benoit. Tab is a well-known blues artist hailing from Louisiana. His style is often referred to as Creole Bayou Blues and he has been compared to blues guitar heavyweights like Albert King, Albert Collins and even Jimi Hendrix. Don’t miss this kick-butt blues act.
Friday’s headliner is Lunar Fire, which is the new Kan’Nal. This band is a tribal psychedelic dance theatre, groovin’ jam band featuring multi-lingual spoken word, rap, hip-hop, disco, trance guitar, bass funk, massive tribal percussion, striking black light effects and fire dancers. Be sure to wear your tie-dye duds.
Other acts include the Grammy-winning Shumei Taiko drummers, the European gypsy band Impromptu, Native American Leon Joseph Littlebird, bluegrass sensation Acoustic Mining Company, jazz wizards Chuck and Theano Lamb (by the way, Chuck is the keyboardist for the Dave Brubeck quartet), and a special performance by Kailin Yong from the Boulder Acoustic Society teaming up with Beth Quist from Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra. Lion SoulJahs will provide groovin’ reggae while Ricardo Pena and his 6 piece latin/salsa band will be smokin'. We also will have a select group of local musicians that feature rock, Celtic, folk, jazz, ukulele and more. CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!Volunteers Needed for the 39th Annual CHUN Capitol Hill People’s Fair

Denver, Colo. – April 29, 2010 – Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods, Inc., is now recruiting volunteers for the 39th Annual CHUN Capitol Hill People’s Fair (voted “Best Annual City Festival of 2005 and 2006” by the readers of the Rocky Mountain News and Westword) to be held at Civic Center Park on June 5 and 6, 2010. The power behind the People’s Fair comes from our tremendous volunteers. More than 300 volunteers are needed every year to assure the success of the People’s Fair and the enjoyment of our many fairgoers.

The People’s Fair remains a shining example of neighborhood pride. It is a community-oriented volunteer event that continues to benefit Capitol Hill non-profit organizations. Greater Capitol Hill non-profit organizations benefit from participating in the People’s Fair by running the soft drink and beer booths at the Fair, and are known as “Community Partners.”

Join us in our efforts to turn the People's Fair into a more environmentally sustainable event. We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about greening and recycling, to guide and educate fairgoers in the correct disposal of their waste. We will provide an educational seminar for all of our GREEN team volunteers to better prepare you in spreading the knowledge needed to create a more sustainable world.

Information/Souvenir BoothsHelp spread the Spirit of the Fair on our Souvenir Team! We have many wonderful items to offer the fairgoers and need your help. Cash handling experience is helpful. You may also help with the most important area of the People's Fair, the Information Booths, where you will answer questions along with acting as the Lost and Found Center, Fair Directory distribution center and the overall fairgoers assistance center.

Fair AmbassadorIn conjunction with the Information Booths, the Fair Ambassadors are the heart of the Fair. Smiling faces and happy feet are needed to greet fairgoers, distribute Fair directories, and provide general information about the Fair and its happenings.

Spirit Team!
Get in the People’s Fair spirit and join us as we spice up the fairgrounds with banners, signs, sidewalk chalk and more!

Entertainment
The People’s Fair offers entertainment on six stages and hosts over 100 bands and entertainment acts over the weekend. Assist the bands as they load in and load out their gear, assist the Stage Managers in organizing the schedules and times of acts and provide assistance to fairgoers enjoying the entertainment.

Site Set-up/Tear Down
This is where things really start to happen. Help transform the streets of the Civic Center into the best party of the year! Let the handyman/woman in you out! Shifts are available Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so be sure to select the one that best fits your schedule. As part of the site set-up team you will be setting up tents, building props, marking booth spaces, lifting and moving heavy objects, setting up tables & chairs, helping exhibitors, etc.
