Rock and Roll Marathon

It was dark and cold, and the lines for the porta-potties were long. 15,000 runners woke up early and made it to the start of the race. For me, it was camera in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. I knew I wasn't running the race but photographing the event is a sport all of it's own. I had my press pass, press parking, and no fear. I started with the great view of the start of the race standing next to the channel 4 News team. I was a little wired on caffeine and chatting up a storm not knowing they are live the entire time. Oops! My apologies to anyone listening I may have said a bad word or more in regards to the cold. Doing what I do I climbed a tree, chased runners who made for good photo ops, and cheered from the asphalt where I took pics of the shoes from ground level. Okay I moved a few barriers to get the best shots but hey, that's what I do.

Now as for the event, I think it was very well organized, especially for a first time, except for one minor detail..... Rock and Roll!! I love that they had all local talent on the track but over half of the bands were NOT Rock and Roll, there was Celtic, Rap, Reggae... so if it was to be a world music marathon then they had it right. Denver has a lot of great Rock bands that should have been there.

Now for a little fun I did go up and check out Brethren Fast, and the boys were rocking it out on 17th and Pearl next to a competitor porta-pottie with yet another long line. The jokes are plentiful with running to the bathroom, doing the potty dance...

300 plus photos later, and I headed home to go back to bed.

PS- The Ronald McDonald clown was too freaky for words!

SYNTHETIC ELEMENTS TRAVELS TO GUAM TO SUPPORT TROOPS

Denver, CO (September 28th, 2010)—Local punk rockers, Synthetic Elements, will be traveling to Guam starting October 24, to show their support for U.S. troops. In conjunction with Armed Forces Entertainment, the band will play three shows at two local clubs for both the Navy (Guam Naval base), and Air Force (Andersen Air Force Base).

In order to gear up for the trip, Synthetic Elements is doing a benefit concert to raise money to send care packages to the troops Sing Sing Piano Bar on October 17th, 2010. All monies raised at the concert will go to funding the purchase of care packages and sending them to U.S. troops in the middle-east. To further show their support to the armed service members and their families, the band is bringing a large amount of t-shirts and CDs to give away in Guam as well as recording footage of the pre-show as well as the tour to be used for a documentary being filmed by Synthetic Elements in partnership with UC Denver.

Fuse, Madison Square Garden’s national music television network, today announced Jasmine Le as the Winner of the “Fuse Ultimate Music Fan Contest.” Le will receive a trip for two to New York City including hotel and airfare, an appearance on the "Fuse Top 20 Countdown," plus two tickets to the Drake concert at Radio City Music Hall.

On September 2, 2010, at The Church Nightclub in Denver, music fans filmed two-minute auditions explaining why they should be named the “Fuse Ultimate Music Fan.” After reviewing all the entries, Fuse judges narrowed it down to the top three finalists. The three finalists’ videos were posted to Fuse.tv/ultimatemusicfan for people to vote for their favorite contestant with the person receiving the most votes winning the “Fuse Ultimate Music Fan Contest.”

Le will appear on Fuse’s weekly video countdown program, “Fuse Top 20 Countdown,” hosted by Allison Hagendorf and Juliya Chernetsky. GREEN DAY & A.F.I. : Perform at Comfort Dental Amphitheater, 8-28-10 photos

One really Cool event I remember from this show was when Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day brought a fan on stage to sing with him. The Fan was a young guy that sang and rocked out just as hard as the band did...then he jumped into the waiting arms of the front rows! He then proceeded to surf right back to his spot in the crowd!

Get Your LAFF On -- RiffTrax LIVE This Thursday

While admittedly having only the most tenuous relationship to the music biz, fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 can see some of their favorite characters perform live-on-screen this Thursday (August 19), beginning at 6:00 p.m. MDT. Michael J. Nelson ("Mike"), Kevin Murphy ("Tom Servo") and Bill Corbett ("Crow T. Robot") reprise their MST3K roles as members of the RiffTrax team, providing witty commentary while watching D-Level movies.

Thanks to Fathom Events, the Denver-area media company that also distributes "The Met in HD" opera cinecasts, fifteen (!!) movie theater complexes along the Front Range will show the RiffTrax crew performing live to the cult movie classic, "Reefer Madness." Check here to find a location near you.

In addition to what will undoubtedly be hilarious, esoteric repartee riffed against one of the most bizarre films ever made, attendees will also be treated to the RiffTrax team's take on three short-subject films. If you're familiar with such classic MST3K bits as "Uncle Jim's Dairy Farm" or "A Day at the Fair," you'll know exactly what to expect.

Rock 'n Roll: It's in the Bag baby!...

Many of you are stoked for the Festival this weekend. Planning out the exact route that you will take to navigate step by step, from stage to stage, with the timing and precision of a GPS tracking unit to check out your favorite bands Some of you may have been talking amongst your friends to find out who will drive each day, or maybe your even tossing up whether you run, ride, or carpool. There is one thing for sure Mile High Music Festival is the place to be.

The Mile High Music festival is a weekend of camping in Rock ‘n Roll. There may not be lions, tigers and bears… but you still have to consider the conditions that Mother Nature can toss in your way. You could be spending all day and late into the evening enjoying the surroundings without concerns or you could be the person trying to mentally pull down the sun under the horizon because your skin has become barbecue.

At this juncture please refer to the Mile High Music Festival website for it has very informative listings of items and behaviors that are cool for the festival and those things that will cause difficulties for your weekend like prohibited items and activities that make you look like an arse. Nobody wants to be... "That Guy" who becomes the talk of the town for the week following the show!


I have come across a lot of good ideas on this website. Let me tell you, I sure know what it’s like to forget one important item that I know is sitting on the kitchen table at home. I would like to present a few ideas of how I would pack my day bag to help me survive in the wild of Mile High Music Festival.

Stay hydrated! Whether you use an empty bladder or water bottle that can be filled on site, remember that you will be in the sun at the Awesome Dick’s Sporting Goods Park which may have some shelter, but it’s not likely you’re going to find too many large trees that will provide shade on the grounds of a soccer stadium.

Here are things I recommend you do not want to leave on your kitchen table: tickets, I.D, sun block, hat, sunglasses, binoculars (to help you see that perfect guitar strum from the grass). Don't forget to bring your needed prescription medications (labeled with your ID), bug spray (remember some of those same small critters that you see in the woods may be there too), and earplugs for when you make it right up next to the stage that you want to see your favorite festival band (Monday will be a tough day at work with the ringing in your ears). A small soft sided cooler with ice and food to supply a nice snack. Keep in mind that there will be plenty of food & beverage options once you are in the show. For those of you who enjoy snapping photos or texting your friends, be sure to bring plenty of batteries for your electronics needs. The Colorado summer weather can be unpredictable, A blanket or small collapsible lawn chair will help to sprawl out and get some 5280 sun in addition a jacket or a poncho will help to keep you dry if the clouds set in.

No matter what items you decide are important for your music camping bag. Most important thing is to put thought into what you will need. Focus on your health and well being vs. extravagant creature comforts that may only add extra weight and limit your dancing abilities: but, if you can’t absolutely make it through the day with out your Frisbee then go ahead and stuff it in the pack too!

Be respectful of the people who work and volunteer at M.H.M.F. They are The Department of Festival Wildlife and Rock‘n Roll Rangers who are there to ensure your safety and comfort. Enjoy yourself and have a lot of fun. This is not a short sprint but a Rock‘n Roll camping trip with a full weekend of Mile High concert scenery and action. Pace yourself for two days of awesome audio/ visual over-load, also don’t forget your well-prepared bag will help make certain your days are the absolute best they can be.
