Nathen Maxwell's solo acoustic gig
For his daughter's birthday Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Molly performed an acoustic set on Friday in Denver. He was joined for a couple songs by Mike Blecha of Synthetic Elements. Here's some pics.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Aug. 24, 2009) -- Colorado Public Radio Classical Music will hand its classical music reins over to listeners this Labor Day weekend during the annual Listener's Choice Labor Day Weekend program, beginning Sept. 4 at 3 p.m.
Listeners can decide exactly what gets played during the three-day event by requesting their classical tunes of choice at www.kvod.org. Music lovers can submit their requests via the “Get your requests in now” link on www.kvod.org, and start listening for their songs at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.
"Colorado Public Radio listeners have already submitted hundreds of favorites they would like to hear over the holiday weekend,” said program director Karla Walker. “Everything from warhorses like Beethoven's 9th Symphony, to evocative French Impressionist music, to a wide range of 20th century classics. We'll do our best to get them all on the air.”

"Get On the Bus" Mobile Event 8/15/09
The Get on the Bus Mobile event was an Awesome!... it was like taking a limo with an RTD twist, to the show!
good times and conversations filled the space on the bus as this adventure rolled its way thru town stopping at a few beverage stores to pick up essential parts and refreshments for the whole crew.
We traveled down the Avenue(colfax) to the Historic Bluebird theater to pick up some more friends..... we embarked on our journey to the Gothic Theater!!!.... Arriving in Rockstar fashion, the UM and Friends hopped off the Bus and Promptly began grill'n up some dogs for dinna!.... after Pre-gaming it with some dogs and brews we all made our way inside to Enjoy the awesome reggae sounds of:
Apex Vibe
and the UMconscious of course!...
Thanks to everyone who made this incredible evening Happen!... including Larry our Friendly Bus driver!

Originally formed in the summer of 2007, the gregarious foursome of the band Quillion found themselves drawn to each other through their shared love of such musical influences as Porcupine Tree, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Radiohead, Garbage and many, many others. Drawing heavily on their rock, pop and progressive influences, Quillion has impressed audiences with melodic riffs punctuated by a duo of lilting vocals. These veterans of local Denver bands Rider Beware, SkullFlux, and the Melanie Susuras Band, are ready to present to you exactly what a Quillion is!

With increasing numbers of veterans returning from their service, and with the Veterans’ Administration operating severely beyond it's capacity, it was clear to Dan Conerd that someone needed to step up and extend support to all veterans. In February this year, with the help of fellow veterans and friends, Conerd began cultivating what is now Progressive Veterans (ProVets). ProVets will hold their fundraising event on August 30, 2009.
ProVets is a community-based organization that proactively supports all soldiers and veterans from all eras and conflicts. Its core purpose is to support deployed soldiers with care packages, to aid in the reintegration of soldiers returning from deployment, and to advocate for homeless veterans by hosting seasonal food, clothing, and heath drives. It aims to educate and to bring together the people of Denver as a community-wide effort.
The organization believes that all people deserve food, shelter, and security and that everyone is entitled to education, freedom, and employment. ProVets members are acutely aware that unjust military aggression, and the budgets that fund it, impede the ability of communities and governments to uphold these basic rights. We are therefore adamantly opposed to unjust military aggression and insist that military forces and governments abide by high ethical standards.
ProVets is proud to host its August 30th event with some of Denver’s most talented artists and musicians in an effort to bring the Denver community together. “I know this will be an amazing show. So many people want to reach out and help veterans and deployed soldiers and we hope to give people the tools they need to do that,” says Conerd.
ProVets had a very successful booth at the Warped Tour this month and engaged people of all ages and interests in its cause. With growing interest, the organization hopes to grow and establish a higher presence in the community.
After the show, ProVets will continue their ongoing care package project. Jessica Leebelt, co-founder says, “As long as we have soldiers serving overseas, we’ll keep sending a little piece of home to as many units as we can.”
With the support gained from the August 30th event, ProVets will continue its work toward providing resources to community members. Our first project is called “Nash Tent” wherein community resources will be organized to support low-income and homeless people, many of whom are veterans, in a centralized location offering the following free services: food, clothing, mental and physical healthcare screenings, and financial and employment assistance. “Outreach at this level can’t be done without huge community support. If people come to our show, chances are, they’ll want to help in some way with Nash Tent. We’re ready to have their help,” says Conerd.

Day 2, Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest: As Killer as the First

Fort Collins, Co—Today started off just as exciting as yesterday. After a dynamic performance, that rocked more that 15,000 people last night by Melissa Etheridge—people flowed back into Old Town Fort Collins for the second day of Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest. The weather held out and the cool temperatures made for a perfect Colorado day to enjoy great local music and national headliner and two time Latin Grammy winner Ozomatli.
The day got off to a TNT start with ACDC cover band High Voltage. The group of teenagers had the heads banging on Walnut Street early in the day. Quemando filled the Mountain Stage with the pulse of Latin rhythms that people couldn’t help but salsa too, and School of Rock packet the Kids Music Adventure—with a energy that only come from a group of kid rockers.
“Wow what a festival! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and all the great music today. It is wonderful to come out to an event that highlights such great musical talent from all over Colorado and National Headliners. We could also listen to all types of Music: Rock or Country, Jazz or Blues, Regge or R&B – this festival has something for everyone,” said Chris Kupac who came out to enjoy the festival on Sunday.
“We had a great weekend. The collaboration between the Downtown Business Association (DBA) and Bohemian Nights helped to make this weekend a success! Great music was the theme of the weekend—and we hope that we exposed Fort Collins to new bands,” said Merry Hummel, Director of the Bohemian Nights.
The day ending with a explosion as Ozomalti took the stage to an energetic crowd of 8000 on the Mountain Stage—the group who came from LA brought their unique flair to Fort Collins. Their music-- a notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, meringue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican reggae and Indian raga-- has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around L.A. That is certainly what they brought to Old Town Square.
“This is a Beautiful, Beautiful Festival you have here in Fort Collins, this is how music should be,” said Wil Dog on stage to the liveliest crowd the festival had seen all weekend.

Oh Boy Boylesque
Sometimes a picture is worth the whole story! I was a bit skeptical heading in to Boylesque, fearing that whole Chippendales scene of sculpted guys begging for dollars. Boylesque was one of the strangest good times I've had lately. There is still one more show today at the 3 Kings Tavern complete with tacos and weenies (their version of a BBQ). Big Red Rooster
It was a Thursday night, I stopped by a few venues to check out the bands. Not much was really happening until the end of the night, the club was sparse with patrons and Big Red Rooster took the stage. I was about to go home and the energy suddenly changed. This band out of Dallas Texas started grooving and suddenly the few people that were there gathered and danced. They have a rock and hip hob blend that was accented with two front singers. One guy had an amazing high head rhythm and blues voice, the other was slamming out the rhymes. They had a full drum kit, bass and lead guitar and keys. Keep an eye out for these guys, they are very popular in Texas and if they keep coming back to Denver they will definitely draw a crowd. Check them out at www.myspace.com/thebigredrooster.

Vans Warped Tour interview marathon
Team CMB filmed 18 interviews on Sunday at the VWT in Denver. We got Less Than Jake, We The Kings, Single File, VWT founder Kevin Lyman, and a ton of others.
Right now we are sorting through gigs and gigs of data in the CMB mountaintop fortress but very soon we will start posting those interviews. And trust me some of the stuff we got is so flippin funny you're definitely gonna wanna watch. 
From Tat imitating Megatron having "relations" to Less Than Jake and myself calling out Tom Jones to the interview with After Midnight Project inside of the tours completely trashed out "Party Bus." Advice for Bands From the Audience’s Perspective

The transition from the garage, studio, or rooftop to the stage is not as easy as you think. First off practice, practice, practice! If you are not fully dedicated don’t waste the public’s time with half hearted antics. Sit down with your band and discuss some of the following questions in depth.
Who is your target audience?
What is your band image that you want to project?
What venues would be appropriate for your band?
Is each person in the band doing what they do best?
It is simple if you want a guitarist, you get a guitarist who plays well and is passionate about the style of music you are creating. If you need a singer, don’t do it by vote and pick someone in the band, get a really good vocalist, and front personality. That is their job, to sing their butt off and reel in the crowd. Make sure each person is focused on making this the best cohesive band you can.
The stage is not the basement. If you want people to come to your shows and come back… you need to practice being on stage. It is so important for the band to interact with each other on stage; look like you are having fun. One big but simple pitfall is staring at your feet. If you have a tendency to do this write on the top of your shoes “What are you looking at?” with a big frown face. Eye contact is so important. Playing in front of a live audience is and exchange of energy look at people; make eye contact. The future fans want to connect with the band. If you stand before them with fear and freeze they will stand way back, or sit, and wait for something to happen, or for you to get off the stage.
There is a reason to have a front person. This is usually filled by the singer and they need to talk to the audience. It is really smart to share some funny story about a song or incident that has happened with the band, this allows you to connect with the audience. The transition from the garage, studio, or rooftop to the stage is not as easy as you think. First off practice, practice, practice! If you are not fully dedicated don’t waste the public’s time with half hearted antics. Sit down with your band and discuss some of the following questions in depth.
Who is your target audience?
What is your band image that you want to project?
What venues would be appropriate for your band?
Is each person in the band doing what they do best?
It is simple if you want a guitarist, you get a guitarist who plays well and is passionate about the style of music you are creating. If you need a singer, don’t do it by vote and pick someone in the band, get a really good vocalist, and front personality. That is their job, to sing their butt off and reel in the crowd. Make sure each person is focused on making this the best cohesive band you can.
The stage is not the basement. If you want people to come to your shows and come back… you need to practice being on stage. It is so important for the band to interact with each other on stage; look like you are having fun. One big but simple pitfall is staring at your feet. If you have a tendency to do this write on the top of your shoes “What are you looking at?” with a big frown face. Eye contact is so important. Playing in front of a live audience is and exchange of energy look at people; make eye contact. The future fans want to connect with the band. If you stand before them with fear and freeze they will stand way back, or sit, and wait for something to happen, or for you to get off the stage.
There is a reason to have a front person. This is usually filled by the singer and they need to talk to the audience. It is really smart to share some funny story about a song or incident that has happened with the band, this allows you to connect with the audience. The Rocky Mountain Music Network List
Every month the Rocky Mountain Music Network tracks what Colorado releases are getting airplay at public/community and college radio stations statewide, and on specialty shows on those commercial radio stations that care to share their information with us.
Each month, a list is sent out to all the radio stations in the reporting network. Each station in the network adds whatever new releases are not on the list, and marks the number of spins for those they played in each reporting cycle (approx. mid-month to mid-month). Titles are held on the list for 12 full months from their date/month of release.
Folks ask me all the time, "how do I get my release on the list?" It's pretty simple really --- get a "standard/retail" packaged cd to radio around the state -- with a big label on it, proclaiming it to be from Colorado (hint - put the sticker directly on the packaging) . Good chance it'll make it onto the list. (PS --- for optimum opportunity, get it to radio BEFORE the planned cd-release-party.)

Bringing it! Blues style!
Review - Mile High Blues Fest Aug 7th/8th - by Ryan Rister
Mile High Marketplace, typically noted for its Mile High Flea Market, had a pleasant addition this weekend. They held their first annual blues music festival. The line up was huge, including some heavily noted artists like, Joe Bonamassa, Eden Brent, Rick Estrin and the Night cats, Delta Sonics, Jimmy Thackery, and many others on the main stage. There was also a smaller stage to fill in between equipment set-ups including some really inspiring, budding youth blues artists like Michaela Ray, Nic Clark, Zack Thorp, and The Austin Young Band.
I consider myself to be a fairly decent guitar player but some of these kids really put me in my place. Study time! Haha. All of the music was intense, leaving goose bumps on my arms for most of the time I attended. The main stage was built inside a massive tent with huge ceiling fans that kept the eager crowd nice and cool throughout the day. Sound barriers throughout the ceiling of the tent kept the sound pristine and clear. Beer, soda, corn on the cob, Turkey legs, kettle corn, Catfish and Shrimp, Ribs! Man! I am getting hungry again! It was like being in another world. A world surrounded with good feelings and incredible emotion through music. We were even able to meet every single one of the artists and get their signatures! Everything was very well thought out and executed flawlessly. We (about 70 people) were waiting for Joe Bonamassa to come down to the CD sales booth and sign autographs but he was back in the green room. The attendant was very helpful. She made a few calls and then led us all like little ducklings around to the back of the tent where Joe’s bus was and we waited for him to come out. He gladly signed passes, shirts, guitars, or whatever you had with you that was Sharpie –ready. All in all, I think the first annual Blues Fest was a great success and a huge ego boost for the Mile High Marketplace. I can’t wait till next year to go again! You have to check this out next time around! Props to Gina Hallisey (Mile High Marketplace event and venue director) for organizing such a much needed event for Blues music in Colorado!!!!

MOST PRESTIGIOUS OPERA COMPETITION IN NORTH AMERICA TO AIR ON COLORADO PUBLIC RADIO, SUNDAY AUGUST 9
CENTENNIAL, Colo. - August 5, 2009 - Colorado Public Radio will air the annual Metropolitan Opera National Council (MONC) Grand Finals Concert, Sunday, August 9, at 8 p.m.
This two-hour broadcast event features a new generation of young voices as the eight 2008-09 MONC Audition finalists perform on stage with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Conductor Patrick Summers.
Former MONC Audition Winner and Baritone Thomas Hampson hosts the concert, which took place in February. Mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick makes a special appearance, performing “La luce langue” from Verdi’s Macbeth.
The broadcast closes with Margaret Juntwait announcing the four winners: Paul Appleby of South Bend, Indiana; Anthony Roth Costanzo of Durham, North Carolina; Sung Eun Lee of Seoul, South Korea; and Nadine Sierra of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Each was awarded a cash prize of $15,000.
Considered the most prestigious opera competition in North America, the 2008-09 MONC Auditions gathered nearly 1,800 singers in 15 regions throughout the United States and Canada.
The competition has discovered hundreds of young opera singers over the past 50 years, including Renée Fleming, Hei-Kyung Hong, Deborah Voigt, Susan Graham, Stephanie Blythe, Nathan Gunn, Ben Heppner, and Samuel Ramey. In a typical season, over 100 alumni of the MONC Auditions are on the Met roster.
A tradition in classical music radio, Colorado Public Radio broadcasts the Met Opera live, each Saturday, December through May on: 88.1 FM in Denver, 91.9 FM in Pueblo, 94.7 FM in Colorado Springs, 89.9 FM in Vail, 90.5 FM in Glenwood Springs, 103.3 FM along the Western Slope, and online at cpr.org.
