One Republic will be among the celebrity bowlers at Flobots.org's annual fundraiser for youth empowerment programs, presented by Microsoft Store, on Saturday, October 8. Led by songwriter and producer Ryan Tedder, the Denver-based band has sold more than two million albums and been nominated for multiple Grammy awards. As a producer, Tedder has crafted hit songs with Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson and and Leona Lewis, whose "Bleeding Love" which was ranked by Billboard as one of the most played songs in the history of radio.

Hosted by Channel 93.3 KTCL's morning jock Goodman, Bowling Ball 3 is a knock-down, drag-out celebrity bowl-off that will pair hometown heroes Flobots against One Republic and other Denver luminaries while raising money for music-based empowerment programs for youth. Teams representing community groups and Colorado businesses compete for a chance to bowl with the celebs in a final round.

New this year, Bowling Ball 3 will feature appearances from some of Denver's most beloved music

Now in its third year, the Bowling Ball 3 supports Flobots.org's music and empowerment programs for youth in Colorado public scools and in youth residential treatment centers Previous participants include the Fray, Rise Against, Matt Morris, the Denver Nuggets and he Colorado Rapids. Last year's winners, the Epilogues, return this year as celebrity judges.

Solitaire Movie Premiere at the Gothic Theatre

First off, I would like to give a big thank you to The Gothic Theatre for the shows they book. I’m always impressed with the performances, whether it is a local music show, national act, or a film/movie premiere. The capacity it holds is an amazing site to see when the house is packed. The Gothic Theatre was named best live music venue in Denver by 5280 Magazine's Top of the Town 2011, and it’s easy to see why.

Not only is the ambiance outstanding, so are the familiar staff faces. I’m always intrigued by the artistic cuts and lines of the architecture, the rounded walls and wonderful recessed coves, and the mural paintings on the ceiling, all mixed with a dedicated staff. It is truly one of a kind.

In 1998, the Gothic was reborn to its glorious state which it is now, when two friends with love music and dreams, purchased the building out of bankruptcy and saved it from the wrecking ball. The new owners remodeled and rebuilt the theatre from the foundation to the roof, retaining the Art deco accents, created a wrap-around balcony, refurbished original marquee, and added a brand-new state of the art sound and light system; transforming the theatre into one of the premier music venues in the world.

Once again, I was able to revel in the ambiance of the Gothic Theatre Thursday, September 15, 2011 for the film debut of Solitaire; a back country skiing, snowboarding, and telemark film from Sweetgrass Productions. The house was packed, sold-out to be exact, and once again I was greeted by some of the familiar faces at the door and bar.

Narrated in Spanish with English subtitles, Solitaire follows an anonymous team of back country skiers and snowboarders across the rugged South American landscape of the Andes Mountains. The stunning imagery was broken by the movie's minimalist narration, a moody and amplifying Spanish reading of Joseph Conrad's novella, "Heart of Darkness." This seemed to draw the audience in deeper to the story that was unfolding before their eyes. As the title implies, Solitaire illustrates the truth that adventure lays not just in the destination, but through the journey of each individual as well.

Though surrounded by 999 fellow snow enthusiasts, I felt secluded and felt the solitary treks of the individuals in the film resonate through me as I silently watched each scene play into the next. The audience held court in silence as they watched the breath-taking footage from the remote areas of the Andes Mountains. The only sounds from the audience were of exalted cheers as they let loose as an awe-inspiring shot of a skier flying over a cornice and landing deep in powder played upon the screen; or when a snowboarder cut fresh, tight lines between rocks on super steep mountains that jut up from Mother Earth.

With the minimal narration, I was left in suspense throughout the entirety of the film. The imagery was spectacular. The length was great. And the music blended beautifully with everything else. I truly can say I was impressed! I can’t wait to watch the film again. The one critique that I, along with others that were standing in front of me, was that the subtitles were a little small and did not stay on the screen long enough to read all of it, especially when having to bob and weave to look over others shoulders and hair.

All in all, Solitaire was a beautiful, breath-taking film, for lack of better words. Most ski and snowboard premieres are packed full of music covered “segments” portraying energetic skiing and riding that amps you up for the new season. Solitaire managed to amp me up, but in a whole new way. It has made me think deeper into why else I snowboard, and a lot of that is solitary confinement in the beauty that Mother Nature holds for us. The Gothic Theatre was the best venue to premiere this film, and I am glad to have been a part of it.

Often called “The best tribute band in the world” Aussie Pink Floyd has in their 20 year history sold over 3 million concert tickets in 35 countries, been internationally recognized as the definitive Pink Floyd tribute experience, and on top of all that they have had the honor of playing David Gilmour’s 50^th birthday party. Aussie Pink Floyd is bringing their massive high tech live show to to the United States with the first concert of the tour being at the Paramount Theater in Denver on October 7^th. I spoke with Colin Wilson (bass/vocals) about what it takes to be in an internationally successful tribute band.

How close are you guys sonically to Pink Floyd?

Colin Wilson: Well we like to think that we are pretty close. We have spent a lot of time trying to get the sounds as accurate as possible so not only playing the notes correctly and the chords and the arrangements but also getting the individual instrument sounds sonically as accurate as possible. With multi-track recording software you can run the original recording back to back with a live recording of ours and kind of follow where things are falling in perfectly and where they are not. We use all that kind of stuff to really analyze what we are doing and where we are doing things well and where we are doing things that need improvement. We certainly didn’t learn the songs 20 years ago and stopped learning. Every year we are analyzing and every year we discover new things about Pink Floyd music. It keeps it exciting for us because we are discovering new things all the time.

Do you use the same instruments?

Colin Wilson: We try and it’s a good place to start to look at what equipment and instruments they used definitely. We use the same guitars for the most part that they used; did and do. Things like what was used in the recording studio we always try and find that stuff out. If it’s possible to get that stuff and use it then we do but often, especially when you are going back to the older material, it may be available but it’s pretty expensive to maintain and it’s not very reliable. With playing so many concerts every year we need gear that’s gonna power up and work perfectly every time. So we tend to use some newer gear that replicates the sound of the older stuff.

What are some of the harder songs to play?

Colin Wilson: They fall into different categories. Some songs are difficult for different reasons. A song like “Echoes” or a song like “Dogs” off of the Animals album are difficult in the sense that they are long, the arrangements are quite complex, the different feel during the song is sometimes hard to really nail but then there are other things that may seem on the surface to be very very simple but they are actually not and some of the early Syd Barrett stuff is like that. The songs are pretty simple songs, they have three or four chords and the arrangements are fairly standard pop music arrangements but the sounds they used, because it’s going back so old now, and there were things that happened in the studio, there were mistakes that were made in the studio and it’s some of those that are very very hard to replicate. For an example if Syd Barrett’s guitar wasn’t perfectly 100% in tune then you try and play that song with a guitar that is - you’re never going to sound like his chords. Figuring out to what degree Syd’s guitar was out of tune is almost impossible. Little things like that are really really difficult to get down, some of the newer stuff is easier in that respect because it was recorded digitally. Everything is perfectly in tune, so in some respects even though they sound more complicated they are easier to recreate.

How do you yourself adapt your playing to the different styles over their whole catalogue of music?

Colin Wilson: We kind of do it song by song. I just sit back and try to listen to it with fresh ears and analyze what was being played at the time, on what instrument and what kind of sound and do it a song at a time. It’s certainly challenging in a certain sense. We did a festival show in Switzerland just a couple of days ago. The set that we played there was no breaks in it and there was one part of the set where I played “Arnold Layne” from the The Piper at the Gates of Dawn album and then straight off that we played “Careful With That Axe Eugene” which is a real cryptic 70’s Roger Waters kind of thing and then straight after that we did “What Do You Want From Me?” from The Division Bell. So bass playing wise you have Roger Waters playing a Rickenbacker in 1967, then he’s playing a Precision bass in the 70’s and it’s all very trippy, and straight off of that I’m into the Guy Pratt era 1990’s bass playing. It struck me at the time that there is no time to adjust between songs. Bang bang bang you’re playing different styles. We’ve been at it for several years now and we’re experienced at doing that and we can do it but years ago it would definitely have been harder to do it flawlessly.

There’s a brand new stage show for the upcoming tour correct?

Colin Wilson: It’s the biggest live show we have ever had. There’s more lights than ever before there’s new video that is projected in 3D. The audience actually gets 3D glasses when they come in and take their seats. In the second half of the show we have these films that are shown in 3D and it’s like being in the movie theater. So that’s all brand new. It really is the biggest and most ambitious thing we have ever done. We’ve toured it already through Europe and the UK. We cannot wait to bring it to the States now and see what you guys make of it. The Paramount in Denver is actually the first show of the U.S. tour so you guys get to see it first.

Thursday, July 28: Fathom Presents Israel Philharmonic at Local Movie Houses

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Israel Philharmonic, Greenwood Village-based Fathom Events will cinecast a one-night-only concert featuring two prominent opera singers, soprano Renee Fleming and tenor Joseph Calleja. Music director Zubin Mehta (pictured above) will conduct the performance, which is being billed as a "delayed live broadcast" from the International Convention Center in Jerusalem. Check local movie listings or the Fathom Web site to locate a screen near you. The performance begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. this Thursday.

Fleming has earned a reputation as one of opera's top sopranos, and she has been featured on many [New York] Metropolitan Opera "Live in HD" cinecasts over the past five years. Fathom Events was the driving force behind bringing live opera to local movie theaters, and their close relationship with the most prominent opera house in the world is the envy of many in the theater business. In recent years, Fleming has appeared in starring roles in Met productions of "Eugene Onegin" [Tchaikovsky], "Armida" [Rossini], and "Capriccio" [R. Strauss], to name but three. Calleja offers a strong, clear tenor voice that has made him one of the most sought-after singers in the past half-decade. Theater-goers would have seen him, most notably, in the Met HD productions of "Tales of Hoffmann" [Offenbach], where he sang the title role, and this past season in the Met's revival of "Lucia di Lammermoor" [Donizetti], performing as Edgardo opposite Natalie Dessay as Lucia.

Zubin Mehta has forged relationships with many of the world's most prestigious orchestras, having made his conducting debut in Vienna in 1958 at the age of 22. His longest tenure, however, rests with the Israel Philharmonic, which appointed him music advisor in 1969, music director in 1977, and Music Director for Life in 1981. He has led the ensemble in both war and peace, famously conducting the Philharmonic in a concert during the first Gulf War where the audience reportedly came to the concert hall with gas masks at hand.

The predecessor to the Israel Philharmonic was the Palestine Orchestra, formed in the 1930s as a haven for Jewish musicians fleeing Europe in advance of the spread of Nazism. Arturo Toscanini conducted the orchestra's first performance on December 26, 1936, and 75 years later the ensemble continues to attract top soloists and singers from across the globe. Attendance at classical music concerts in Israel is high, far beyond the numbers one might expect to see in a nation with such a small population. The orchestra has close to 30,000 annual subscribers to its string of concert series, oftentimes finding it necessary to repeat the same program five or six times in various venues throughout the country.

Given the identity of the soloists, it should be no surprise that this gala performance is heavily populated with operatic arias and duets. The program will open with the overture to one of Verdi's most dramatic works, "La forza del destino" (The Force of Destiny) and goes on to feature Fleming in arias from Gounod's "Faust," Puccini's "Tosca," and Verdi's "La traviata." Calleja will join Fleming in the Act I duet from Puccini's "Madama Butterfly," as well as singing solo pieces from "Tosca" and Verdi's "Rigoletto."

Havok and Revocation at The Marquis

So I've often wondered what would happen if you threw in a bunch of '80's thrash metal with a pinch of progressive metal into a still and bottled it up, how would it turn out? Well it's like putting Havok and Revocation on the same stage. You get a show of mind melting leads broken up by some face smashing rhythms that's guaranteed to get you moving.

Lets start off with Havok. It was a grand welcome home show for one of Denver's best metal bands in years. They put on a show packed with killer thrash metal that I haven't seen the likes of in a while. With it being a show at the Marquis Theater, the crowd was up close and personal feeding the band with tons of energy making for a show worthy of greatness. If you are from or live in Denver and into metal check these guys out, they won't let you down.

Now for Revocation. There's a reason Metal Sucks named David Davidson “Best Modern Metal Guitarist”. You can listen to their albums and not fully understand the talent this band puts out until you see them live. Once you see Davids hands flying up and down the fretboard and all the little technical bits of genius in their songs you understand why he beat out the likes of John Petrucci from Dream Theater, Jeff Loomis from Nevermore, and Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders. These guys are in a league of their own with a style nobody can lay a finger on somewhere in the realm of progressive thrash metal.

I have to say this is the best show I've seen all year. If anybody out there gets a chance to see either of these bands, do it, you won't be let down. Till next time, keep up the path of destruction.

I Had a blast at this show. It was a a Packed house at the Ogden. This brings a energy that is ideal for CAKES quirky and fun sound!One of my Favorite highlights of the show was a crowd singalong with cake on "Satin is My Motor" and "Mexico" from their album Prolong the Magic. This brought up heat in the Ogden.

The multi gold and platinum album selling band Kansas has a new symphonic DVD out entitled There’s Know Place Like Home and will be playing Red Rocks on June 8^th. I spoke with the band’s guitarist Rich Williams who has been with Kansas since 1974 about what it was like to add 50 people to their band for the DVD, how he felt about reuniting with some former members of Kansas, and his thoughts on Red Rocks.

The new Kansas symphonic DVD There’s Know Place Like Home looks like it was a pretty huge undertaking. What was it like putting it together?

Rich Williams: You know the performing is really the easy part. We’ve done it lots of times ourselves and lots of times with symphonies. The hardest part was deciding where we were going to do it so that it made sense. You could have gone to Baton Rouge and played and I’m sure it would have been fine but it doesn’t make any sense. It wasn’t until we looked at going back home where we got our start in Topeka that things started to gel. We contacted White Concert Hall at Washburn University in Topeka to check out that facility and it turned out that the girl who runs it her father owns the music store that we hung around in back then so it really started to become a coming home event. Then every twist and turn started to make sense. So then we advanced the charts to the school and they had a chance to work on it long in advance so the music part was actually the easiest thing. Getting the stage prepared, the lights in, mobile trucks prepared, all that was a huge undertaking none of which fell on my shoulders. (laughs) That was a management and record company that handled all those things. We just stood there looked pretty and played that’s what our job was. (laughs) Afterwards, after the event there’s a tremendous amount of work in post production. There were ten cameras shooting so you have to look at every camera shot, determining which ones to take and then mixing the entire album with us plus a fifty piece orchestra.

When you approached the symphony what was their reaction to all of this?

Rich Williams: We did an album with the London Symphony Orchestra 13 years ago and we have been doing symphony shows ever since. So we’re pretty used to doing this and we have worked with a lot of colleges already. So we kind of knew what questions to ask and how to approach them plus we had a product to show in terms of something that they could hear. Larry Baird who is our conductor, he wrote all the scores, he started with the Moody Blues doing all the stuff for their shows he’s been doing this for a very long time so he know the way to explain through all of this to the schools or whatever. With a school it’s different because they’re not set up for advertisement, set up for marketing, or set up for selling tickets to these things so the learning curve is a lot different. Which means it will take more time to set it all up.

So with the college symphony shows do you ever get somebody who gets all star struck on stage with you guys?

Rich Williams: Well sometimes we’ll pull people from the city orchestras who are a little bit jaded and they have to be there and other times it’s “Hey this show is coming and who would like to perform on it?” and then you get fans who really want to do it and that’s fun. For some of the college kids they have never even heard of us, maybe some of them know us from their parents or from playing video games like Guitar Hero or Garage Band where we have stuff on it. The fun part working with the college kids is that they bring so much excitement to the table. They know that we have been doing this for a long time and it is inspiring to be around that energy.

For the DVD what was it like playing with Steve Morris again?

Rich Williams: We hadn’t worked with him since he was in the band and so that was really fun it was just like another day. He popped in and we had rehearsal and he was ready to go. He’s so good it doesn’t take him long to jump back in the saddle plus it was fun for Kerry and Steve to play together because they had never played together before because they were both in Kansas at separate times.

Were there any songs that didn’t work with the symphony and had to be shelved?

Rich Williams: The song Portrait it doesn’t work that well it sounds a little bit trite and it kind if takes some of the oomph out of it where a song like Cheyenne Anthem really comes alive with a symphony.

You guys are playing Red Rocks on June 8^th. Now what’s your take on that venue?

Rich Williams: I think this is our fourth time there. Of all the places to play that definitely has got to be in the top three and I really can’t think of anything I would put above it. There’s just something incredibly special about playing at Red Rocks. Universally with any musician I talk to when we start talking about favorite places when you mention Red Rocks its “Oh yeah, that is the place.” There’s a few places that you almost get nervous to play and Red Rocks is one of them. It’s an unexplainable feeling of “This is not a normal show”. There’s something like “This is an event” and an honor almost to be there. I don’t get butterflies very often but Red Rocks will do that. It’s just a very special night for the performer to be there.

The June 8^th show at Red Rocks is you and Jethro Tull do you have any openers on that show?

Rich Williams: No, I think it’s just the two of us. They invited us to play on their whole tour and we wanted to but they are not doing a lot of dates in the states, only select dates and the offer for us to go to Europe for a month came up do we had to jump on that but we said, “We can make the Red Rocks show.” If that would be okay and they said “Sure” which is really where we wanted to play (laughs) so it all worked out and I haven’t seen Tull in a long time so I’m looking forward to that.

We had the chance to see Drowning Pool on tour in support of their latest self-titled album the other night. The band was coming off a three month hiatus and came to town to celebrate St. Patricks day with KBPI. After going 1-1 at foosball with some lucky KBPI contest winners, and waiting for the five opening acts to warm up the crowd Drowning Pool was ready to smack Denver right in the face, and Denver LIKED it. Drowning Pool is known for their in your face, aggressive rock as well as their soul wrenching and melodic ballads. They didn't disappoint on this official night of Leprechauns and green beer, and the energy they gave off was palpable as the crowd rocked all night long with the hard luck band from Texas. Drowning Pool is on their third vocalist thus far, having lost their first lead man to an unexpected death from an undiagnosed heart condition and their second when he cited "personal reasons" on the eve of a hometown show. Luckily for Drowning Pool, the old saying third time is the charm has a ring of truth to it in this case, and Ryan McCombs appears to be here to stay. Drowning Pool on St. Patrick's day took a tried and true formula of kick-ass rock and excellent musicianship and reminded everyone in Denver why they belong in the upper echelon of hard rock acts. If you had the luck O' the Irish with you on March 17th, you were at the Drowning Pool show, and you got rocked green style with DP.

Working with Chris, Groovey, WARGOD, Stu, and all the people that were involved was an experience that will never be forgotten! Over 70 awesome screaming fans made their way out to Summit Music Hall to take part in the show case! Unfortunately, T4T fell a few votes short of advancing, being beat out by eventual overall champions James and the devil. T4T wants to thank all of their fans for coming out and making this an awe-ing experience for the band!

Playing to nearly sold out crowd at the Ogden; Cold War Kids came through with a strong show built of fan favorites such as "Hang me up to Dry" , "Hospital Beds" and "Santa Ana Winds" to name a few!

Making sure to add in a mix of songs from their newest Album "Mine Is Yours". featuring songs such as "Royal Blue" , "Skip the Charades, "Louder Than Ever". Cold war kids gave the house an overall great evening of a soulful rock along with an easy likable stage presence.

Robbie Hart (Ben Dicke) is New Jersey's favorite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party - until his own fiancée (Amanda Earls) leaves him at the altar. Broken-hearted, Robbie proceeds to make every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia (Brianna Firestone), a sweet, girl-next-door-type who befriends Robbie and wins his affection. But Julia is about to be married to a slimy Wall Street shark (Travis Risner), and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of the decade, the true girl of his dreams will remain nothing more than a dream.

The Fox is excited to welcome special guest Emmy-nominated Director/Choreographer Mandy Moore back to Colorado for this production. Ms. Moore has been a choreographer and guest judge on FOX’s hit dance show, So You Think You Can Dance for the past 6 seasons. She has also appeared on television shows such as The Drew Carey Show, Malcolm in the Middle and That '70s Show, as well as the films Austin Powers and Bubble Boy. In addition to So You Think You Can Dance (for which she earned an Emmy Nomination during Season 3), Mandy has choreographed for several television shows including American Idol.

Specializing in jazz and contemporary dance, she also worked for Celine Dion on her Taking Chances concert tour. She currently teaches at the Edge Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles.

Mandy and her sister Missy Moore (a local actress, theatre arts instructor, fight choreographer and Assistant Director for The Wedding Singer), both from the Denver area, are pleased to be teaming up together to bring the retro splash and color of the 80’s to the Aurora Fox stage, including several outstanding production numbers, and a few fun surprises.

Saturday's Met Opera in HD: "Nixon in China"

This Saturday, February 12, American composer John Adams makes his Metropolitan Opera debut when he takes the podium to conduct his 1987 opera, Nixon in China. The performance will be seen in movie theaters across America, courtesy of the ongoing Met in HD series and its partnership with Denver's Fathom Events. The opera begins promptly at 11:00 Mountain Time, with a running time (including intermissions) of about four hours.

Colorado venues will include several Denver-area Regal Cinemas (Downtown Pavilions, So. Colorado Blvd, Greenwood Plaza, Colorado Mills), AMC Theatres (Westminster, Highlands Ranch), and Cinemark Theatres (Aurora, Boulder), as well as movie complexes in Fort Collins, Greeley, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Durango. Check local listings for your nearest location.

This Adams opera is appearing for the first time on the stage at New York's Metropolitan. The work received its world premiere at Houston Grand Opera (one of its commissioning agents) and deals specifically with a single historical moment, the momentous face-to-face meeting between Richard Nixon, the sitting American president, and legendary Chinese ruler Mao Zedung. Four other main characters are depicted in the opera (libretto by Minnesota poet Alice Goodman): First Lady Pat Nixon, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Jiang Qing ("Mrs. Mao"), and Premier Zhou Enlai.

Appearing as Nixon is baritone James Maddelena, the man who created the role nearly 24 years ago. This is a reunion of sorts since the producer of the Met's debut, Peter Sellars, was also responsible for the Houston premiere. The remaining cast includes soprano Janice Kelly [Pat Nixon], tenor Robert Brubaker [Mao], soprano Kathleen Kim [Jiang], bass Richard Paul Fink [Kissinger], and baritone Russell Braun [Zhou].

Composer Adams is known for his minimalist musical style, and the score to Nixon in China is straight out of his most minimal period. A review of last week's opening night performance by New York Magazine columnist Justin Davidson cites, "the importance of a transformative score that demonstrated the full range of what Minimalism could accomplish." The concept that minimalism has a "full range" seems incongruous, but the music does create a surprisingly fulsome sound behind the singers.

Anyone who has come of age in the decades since Nixon's historic 1972 visit is probably puzzled by all the hoopla. But China was seen then in the role of the great unknown, a Communist giant so intent on its own internal vision of ethnic cleansing— a twenty-plus year orgy of the subjugation of its intellectual elite, even to the point of mass murder on a near-Stalinistic scale— that it had virtually no political or economic links to the outside world during that time. The China of today, with its Western-style industrialization and modernity, is vastly different from the country Mao and his cronies had ruled with an iron fist. Some historians claim only a Republican president like Nixon could have bridged the gap with a Communist regime and survived what might have been another "Red" hunt, had a Democratic president made a similar effort. Others liken Nixon's efforts to those of Commodore Perry in the 1850s, when a Shogun-dominated Japan finally opened its doors to trade with the West.

The events depicted in Nixon in China occasionally seem as distant from us as the world of the Genoan doge appears in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. But the music serves to remind us that this is truly a modern work, no matter how much librettist Goodman tried to create a timeless story of the clash of two cultures.

Wheelchair Sports Camp - Upcoming Show!

It was dark and cold, and the lines for the porta-potties were long. 15,000 runners woke up early and made it to the start of the race. For me, it was camera in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. I knew I wasn't running the race but photographing the event is a sport all of it's own. I had my press pass, press parking, and no fear. I started with the great view of the start of the race standing next to the channel 4 News team. I was a little wired on caffeine and chatting up a storm not knowing they are live the entire time. Oops! My apologies to anyone listening I may have said a bad word or more in regards to the cold. Doing what I do I climbed a tree, chased runners who made for good photo ops, and cheered from the asphalt where I took pics of the shoes from ground level. Okay I moved a few barriers to get the best shots but hey, that's what I do.

Now as for the event, I think it was very well organized, especially for a first time, except for one minor detail..... Rock and Roll!! I love that they had all local talent on the track but over half of the bands were NOT Rock and Roll, there was Celtic, Rap, Reggae... so if it was to be a world music marathon then they had it right. Denver has a lot of great Rock bands that should have been there.

Now for a little fun I did go up and check out Brethren Fast, and the boys were rocking it out on 17th and Pearl next to a competitor porta-pottie with yet another long line. The jokes are plentiful with running to the bathroom, doing the potty dance...

300 plus photos later, and I headed home to go back to bed.

PS- The Ronald McDonald clown was too freaky for words!

SYNTHETIC ELEMENTS TRAVELS TO GUAM TO SUPPORT TROOPS

Denver, CO (September 28th, 2010)—Local punk rockers, Synthetic Elements, will be traveling to Guam starting October 24, to show their support for U.S. troops. In conjunction with Armed Forces Entertainment, the band will play three shows at two local clubs for both the Navy (Guam Naval base), and Air Force (Andersen Air Force Base).

In order to gear up for the trip, Synthetic Elements is doing a benefit concert to raise money to send care packages to the troops Sing Sing Piano Bar on October 17th, 2010. All monies raised at the concert will go to funding the purchase of care packages and sending them to U.S. troops in the middle-east. To further show their support to the armed service members and their families, the band is bringing a large amount of t-shirts and CDs to give away in Guam as well as recording footage of the pre-show as well as the tour to be used for a documentary being filmed by Synthetic Elements in partnership with UC Denver.

One really Cool event I remember from this show was when Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day brought a fan on stage to sing with him. The Fan was a young guy that sang and rocked out just as hard as the band did...then he jumped into the waiting arms of the front rows! He then proceeded to surf right back to his spot in the crowd!

While admittedly having only the most tenuous relationship to the music biz, fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 can see some of their favorite characters perform live-on-screen this Thursday (August 19), beginning at 6:00 p.m. MDT. Michael J. Nelson ("Mike"), Kevin Murphy ("Tom Servo") and Bill Corbett ("Crow T. Robot") reprise their MST3K roles as members of the RiffTrax team, providing witty commentary while watching D-Level movies.

Thanks to Fathom Events, the Denver-area media company that also distributes "The Met in HD" opera cinecasts, fifteen (!!) movie theater complexes along the Front Range will show the RiffTrax crew performing live to the cult movie classic, "Reefer Madness." Check here to find a location near you.

Many of you are stoked for the Festival this weekend. Planning out the exact route that you will take to navigate step by step, from stage to stage, with the timing and precision of a GPS tracking unit to check out your favorite bands Some of you may have been talking amongst your friends to find out who will drive each day, or maybe your even tossing up whether you run, ride, or carpool. There is one thing for sure Mile High Music Festival is the place to be.

The Mile High Music festival is a weekend of camping in Rock ‘n Roll. There may not be lions, tigers and bears… but you still have to consider the conditions that Mother Nature can toss in your way. You could be spending all day and late into the evening enjoying the surroundings without concerns or you could be the person trying to mentally pull down the sun under the horizon because your skin has become barbecue.

At this juncture please refer to the Mile High Music Festival website for it has very informative listings of items and behaviors that are cool for the festival and those things that will cause difficulties for your weekend like prohibited items and activities that make you look like an arse. Nobody wants to be... "That Guy" who becomes the talk of the town for the week following the show!

I have come across a lot of good ideas on this website. Let me tell you, I sure know what it’s like to forget one important item that I know is sitting on the kitchen table at home. I would like to present a few ideas of how I would pack my day bag to help me survive in the wild of Mile High Music Festival.

Stay hydrated! Whether you use an empty bladder or water bottle that can be filled on site, remember that you will be in the sun at the Awesome Dick’s Sporting Goods Park which may have some shelter, but it’s not likely you’re going to find too many large trees that will provide shade on the grounds of a soccer stadium.

Here are things I recommend you do not want to leave on your kitchen table: tickets, I.D, sun block, hat, sunglasses, binoculars (to help you see that perfect guitar strum from the grass). Don't forget to bring your needed prescription medications (labeled with your ID), bug spray (remember some of those same small critters that you see in the woods may be there too), and earplugs for when you make it right up next to the stage that you want to see your favorite festival band (Monday will be a tough day at work with the ringing in your ears). A small soft sided cooler with ice and food to supply a nice snack. Keep in mind that there will be plenty of food & beverage options once you are in the show. For those of you who enjoy snapping photos or texting your friends, be sure to bring plenty of batteries for your electronics needs. The Colorado summer weather can be unpredictable, A blanket or small collapsible lawn chair will help to sprawl out and get some 5280 sun in addition a jacket or a poncho will help to keep you dry if the clouds set in.

No matter what items you decide are important for your music camping bag. Most important thing is to put thought into what you will need. Focus on your health and well being vs. extravagant creature comforts that may only add extra weight and limit your dancing abilities: but, if you can’t absolutely make it through the day with out your Frisbee then go ahead and stuff it in the pack too!

Be respectful of the people who work and volunteer at M.H.M.F. They are The Department of Festival Wildlife and Rock‘n Roll Rangers who are there to ensure your safety and comfort. Enjoy yourself and have a lot of fun. This is not a short sprint but a Rock‘n Roll camping trip with a full weekend of Mile High concert scenery and action. Pace yourself for two days of awesome audio/ visual over-load, also don’t forget your well-prepared bag will help make certain your days are the absolute best they can be.

Groupie Love...10 Years Later

MTV has a new show called "When I was 17." This is Colorado Music Buzz's "When I was 14"

When I was 17 I was graduated from high school and all about Hip Hop....but when I was 14 I was in LOVE with The Backstreet Boys. We're talking posters in my room, all the magazine cut outs I could fit in my middle school locker and obnoxious tears at my very first concert-BSB at the Pepsi Center.
I was especially crazy about A.J. (the bad boy). Not only was he the best singer, he had tattoos and cool style. I loved their love songs, though I knew nothing about love and was still a little but afraid of boys. I hated N'Sync and I new every word to every song- melodies and ad libs included.

10 years later, I was reunited with my 14-year-old love.
I did my best to go in without expectation. Would they be old and slow? Would their voices sound untrained? Did years of drugs, having kids and living in the post-MTV generation of music kill their spirits and rhythm? Worst of all, would A.J. look like a creepy old man to me now?

Short one member (the oldest dude who seldom had a solo or a screaming girl in his wake is no longer a part of the crew) they got down just like they used to. The stage was smaller. the effects were lessened and the girls weren't quite as loud, but the outfits still matched, the dance moves still looked kinda dumb and the words haven't changed.I had a new appreciation for the love songs as an adult. Who doesn't want to be told their man will love them no matter what and he sympathizes with your broken heart?

Despite the flack that they have and probably still receive for being part of Lou Pearlman's boy band machine in the 90s, these guys really can sing. The harmonies were on point and there were no background singers or lip-synching moments. The two hour set combined some of their new material and a lot of the old favorites. They changed outfits a handful of times- still maintaining that hardly visible individual flair in the form of a belt here or a hat there.

And, A.J. did look a little less bad ass and a little more bald, but he still leads the group in power vocals and swag.

Wednesday Nights @ the [Met] Opera

Beginning tomorrow evening (June 16), a number of Denver-area movie theatres will reprise six different Met in HD productions over the course of consecutive Wednesday evenings. These operas are replays of the live Saturday afternoon cinecasts taken from the past several seasons. Each encore presentation starts promptly at 6:30 p.m. To find a venue near you, check out Fathom Events, the Metropolitan Opera, or the Denver Post. Here is a brief description of the first two operas to be shown:

June 16—Aida
The Met’s production of this Verdi masterpiece is a massive homage to excess—grand opera at its most extravagant—from the spectacular costumes to the larger-than-life sets. The well-known Triumphal March scene includes so many extras and props that every pseudo-Egyptian artifact within miles of Lincoln Center is in use on this stage. Violetta Urmana sings the title role and does a credible job, as does Johan Botha as Radamès (her erstwhile lover), but this production belongs to Dolora Zajick, the American-born mezzo-soprano who has owned the role of Amneris for the past 20 years and still performs it with tremendous fire and a voice you will not easily forget.

June 23—Roméo et Juliette
Anna Netrebko (pictured above) received significant kudos for her performance in this most famous of Charles Gounod’s operas, and her spectacular vocal gymnastics are but one reason not to miss this performance. Her athleticism adds a youthful exuberance to a role usually sung by staid sopranos who require a significant amount of suspension of disbelief when contemplating the fact that Juliet is supposed to be a teenager. This performance reaches back several years, prior to the vocal difficulties that now seem to affect tenor Roberto Alagna, although he would definitely not be my first choice for Roméo.
