Mayhem Marathon 2009: Return of the Son of Mayhem

Mayhem 2009 was a huge success for the CMB crew. We got lots of cool videos that have been posted for your enjoyment. We made lots of cool friends. I gave Joel from Killswitch Engage the stupidest comb on the planet as a joke and I got spit on by Manson 3 times. We also made it into the after party and got to do some partying with the happy inhabitants of Mayhem Land. Over all a legendary life experience for those mighty CMBers who were involved.

Matt Heafy of Trivium getting interviewed in back of the venue.

Byron Davis of God Forbid having an epic dread moment.

Oli from All That Remains.

Joel from Killswitch Engage. Beard comb!

Slayer!!

Marilyn Manson checking out my $100 Walmart camera. He was tired of spitting his beer on me at this point.

The Jager ice sculpture that doubled as a shot slide. Way good times were had at the after party!

So all in all it was a insanely good time! I would like to thank the mighty CMB for making it possible and Stu Kennedy and Chris Ehmann for all the wicked awesome video interview support and Hollywood Music TV and Jett Fox Promotions for all they do.

Now onto the next big CMB adventure!! The Vans Warped Tour here we come!

Mile High Music Festival review

Mile High Music Festival
by Katie Flannery
Katie@ColoradoMusicBuzz.com

The day dawned bright and sunny and the last minute plans to head to Commerce City for the Mile High Music Festival were coalescing nicely. Lindsay called and expressed her desire to “not be in the sun all day” and I readily agreed: me in the hot sun for several hours would result in me being “that guy” passed out on the grass due to heat exhaustion. We decided to jump in the car around 3pm and as John, Lindsay and I were on our way we made some observations on our less than enthusiastic attitudes. “It doesn’t seem as though we’re on our way to a festival…let alone getting ready to hear Panic play until 2am,” I said as I turned around to talk to Lindsay in the backseat. “I know,” she said. “I think it’s because we haven’t been planning for this – we decided to go last minute.” It looked like everyone else decided to attend the festival last minute as well. After absolutely no traffic on the way to the festival grounds at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park we found our way to the media/VIP parking lot and made our way to the main box office so Lindsay and John could purchase tickets and I could pick up my media pass. A very long line awaited us and more people were pouring in behind us. The weather wasn’t as hot as last year, but standing on the pavement in the hot sun was too much for some to handle as I offered my water bottle to a girl who passed out in the grass.

Picking up my wristband was fast and easy and I walked back to stand in line with Lindsay and John. After about fifteen minutes the people ahead of us started running towards the entrance to the stadium and a moment of hopeful confusion passed over me. “What’s going on? Are they letting people in…for free…? Nah….” We heard shouts as we got closer: “This is a cash only line!” That was good for us since cash is what we had. As our wait got shorter we heard someone yell: “It’s $110 for a one day pass!” I couldn’t believe it – after checking the festival website, calling the information number and sending an email I was informed that the day of show ticket price would not be more than the $105.50 price that included all service fees and charges. After inquiring about the price to a woman who was telling everyone how much the ticket was I was told that I could “get back in the other line if I didn’t like the $110 price.” After all was said and done, John and Lindsay did not overpay for their tickets.

We arrived inside just in time to hear Big Head Todd and the Monsters perform a cover of “Rosalita” (I detest Bruce Springsteen - send all condemning emails to the above address). We made our way to the water fountain station to fill water bottles and take a look around before we headed to meet friends. Compared to last year, there were more water stations, the placement of the stages were different and placed closer together, the food vendors were more centralized and recycling stations were never far away. I had never heard Paolo Nutini and was pleased with what I heard. The crowd was large and obviously enjoying the Scottish soul singer’s performance. A group of us wandered over to hear G. Love & Special Sauce and found some shade near the back of the tent. I know quite a few people that enjoy G. Love’s Philly style of blues-hip hop but I can only take it in small doses. I wasn’t near the front of the stage where most of the enthusiastic crowd was gathered but the majority of the people in the middle and back of the tent were obviously there to get out of the sun – with large numbers laying down and sleeping. After twenty minutes I decided to head over and hear one of my favorite bands: The Greyboy Allstars. This band never disappoints. Saxophonist Karl Denson consistently blew solid solos and added to the overall tone color of the band by also playing auxiliary percussion. Robert Walter on keys is a wonder to behold, and my friend Doug pointed out that “even in this heat, he’s still wearing his suit jacket!” At this point we decided that food was in order and we enjoyed an early dinner on the shaded soccer turf. The rubberized turf became a critical element of preventing sore feet and knees by the end of the night. Hungry no longer, we made our way to hear The Black Keys and my insides were soon vibrating with the incredibly loud kick drum. The sun was on its way down behind the mountains and I decided that beer was now in order. The power duo put on an impressive blues-rock show that left a lot of us wanting more.

I was anxious to see Tool and as we walked over to the stage area the anticipation in the air was palpable. Throughout the day it was evident there were thousands of Tool fans in attendance – just judging from the amount of Tool t-shirts that were proudly displayed. My friends and I were set up quite far back from the stage and the sound was being whipped around by the strong winds that picked up during the performance. This diminished the overall enjoyment of the music but being farther away gave us a good view of the laser light show. No matter what happened with the overall sound, the band was impressive with their skill and Maynard’s remarkable voice pierced through the night. I missed the last fifteen minutes of the show to make my way over to the other main stage to meet with friends for the last band of the night: Widespread Panic.

Panic closed out the night with a set that began around 10:50 pm. The band experienced some technical difficulty when guitarist Jimmy Herring’s amplifier starting smoking during the opening song “Goin’ Out West.” The problem was quickly remedied and the band played for three straight hours. The exceedingly large crowd was kept dancing and grooving until 2 am. I was energized from the experience and tired from the hot sun and three hours of dancing. As we made our way out of the festival grounds and back to the car we agreed that the Panic show was top-notch and the overall experience at the festival was a good one. I hope the event will continue to improve in the years to come.

Localpalooza Aug 29th - Need more Bands - esp. Indie and Rock - Please read below...

AUG 29TH 2009
First of all let's talk about where this thing originated. Localpalooza has been around since 2001 though mostly in the hard rock or metal scene. This is the 6th incarnation of the event, having moved from the Blue Bird, Gothic and Ogden to our latest location in Civic Center Park for the festival in 2009. The event is focused on supporting the community as a whole by promoting the talent we have in our local music scene while encouraging people to shop locally. In conjunction with promoting a healthy economy we have partnered this year with "Soar with the Angels," a local chapter of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society to raise money for their research programs and they are lending marketing support for the event. But as we all know budgets are tight at the moment and this is an event depends on all of you.

The cost of renting space like this in Denver is pricey and we are still a local promoter guys. Each application goes to pay for the facility rental, sound and light, NOT into our pockets. This event hinges on community support and it is a free show in the heart of Denver. Bands will be selected by Panel with Whisper Fiercely, Colorado Music Buzz, Fury Artist Management and other industry professionals! Bands who care about making a difference and making sure that Denver understands the power of local music are encouraged to apply! We have vendor spaces available to those who are interested in setting up a booth at the show! Whisper Fiercely has great specials on screen printing during the month of August for bands that need to create a merch line as well. Feel free to check out some of the other bands we do merch for and ask them their opinion of working with us. All applicants will be listed as supports in the September issue of the Colorado Music Buzz Magazine and have VIP access the day of the event. Thank you so much for your support!

email Whisperfiercely@gmail.com for more info and to participate.

Free CSO Concert -- Thursday, July 23

Denver's Cheesman Park will be the site of a FREE concert by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO), beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 23. The ensemble will be led by associate conductor Scott O'Neil in a program heavily invested in Eastern European music. The CSO will perform the Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla by GLINKA, Slavonic Dances by DVOŘÁK, and Symphony No. 4 by TCHAIKOVSKY.

The band shell is situated on the north side of the inner circle, close to the 12th Avenue entrance to the park. Given the popularity of free CSO concerts around town, showing up early to secure a choice position is always a good idea. Use of public transportation is highly encouraged as is arrival by bicycle or on foot, given the parking challenges in the vicinity.

The CSO will also present a free concert at Sweetwater Park in Lone Tree. Titled "An American Salute," that performance will take place on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

"Rinaldo" Opens Saturday, July 11

The third and final offering in this summer's Central City Opera season is Rinaldo, a baroque masterpiece by G.F. Handel that first appeared onstage in 1711. Because of the period in which it was written, the opera's two primary male roles (Rinaldo and Eustazio) were filled by castrati. Nowadays, of course, these parts are sung either by countertenors or mezzo-sopranos.

In the accompanying preproduction photo by the incomparable Matthew Staver (who also supplied the earlier pix posted here for Lucia and A Little Night Music), we see (L - R) Phyllis Pancella as Rinaldo and Megan Hart as Almirena. Also, Kathleen Kim appears as Armida, with Jason Abrams as Eustazio.

The story uses as its backdrop the First Crusade, although the historical implications of those times act primarily as a vehicle for what is ultimately a love story. The libretto is loosely based on an epic poem by Torquato Tasso (Italy's most famous poet after Dante, and himself the subject of a rarely performed opera by Donizetti), whose title translates to "Jerusalem Delivered."

Central City Opera's production of Rinaldo is directed by Marc Astafan, and the conductor is Matthew Halls. Including this Saturday's debut (with its 8:00 p.m. curtain), the opera will be performed a total of seven times between now and August 1. Tickets still remain and may be purchased online as well as by phone.

Central City Sends In Clowns, Beginning Saturday

Stephen Sondheim's musical masterpiece, A Little Night Music, is the second of three productions to find its way to the Central City Opera House stage this summer. This multi-Tony-winning musical, starring Sylvia McNair as Desiree Armfeldt and Robert Orth as Frederic Egerman (pictured left) , debuts Saturday afternoon (July 4) at 2:30 p.m., the first of eleven performances.

The musical opened on Broadway in 1973 but happens to straddle the operatic line as well, since it has been performed at various times by New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and Los Angeles Opera. The story revolves around several couples whose views on such topics as love and sex are explored in a waltz-like setting; the story is an adaptation from the Bergmann film, Smiles of a Summer Night. The big number in this piece is the pop anthem, "Send in the Clowns."

Ken Cazan is the director, enjoying his fourth production with Central City Opera. The choreographer is Kimberly Mackin, and the director is Christopher Zemliauskas.

Because casinos in Colorado's three mountain gambling towns raised their betting limits a couple of days ago to $100, plus new games such as craps and roulette were introduced as well, traffic is expected to be heavier compared to last year. It makes good sense to plan ahead if you're attending any of the opera company's performances this summer. There is a dedicated parking lot immediately adjacent to the building.
